Don C. Keenan is the principal in the Atlanta based Keenan Law Firm. With proceeds from his law practice, Mr. Keenan established The Keenan Kids Foundation in 1993.
His pro bono effects on behalf of children began in the early 1980’s when he undertook the case of Kathy Jo Taylor, a young girl beaten into a comma by her foster parents. Kathy Jo’s case led to a landmark US Supreme Court opinion, which for the first time established rights on behalf of children in foster care.
In 1998 Mr. Keenan received the Chief Justice Award for public service and he has twice been voted Trial Lawyer of the Year for his efforts on behalf of children. The Atlanta Tribune had dubbed him “The Voice of the Voiceless”.
In 1999 he undertook the representation of Terrell Mitchell Peterson a five year old boy murdered after being placed by the State with his step grandmother. The case was featured on 60 Minutes II and was the cover story of TIME Magazine November 2000. |
